I bought another set of towers to use with a bar I had to bring the total up to 4. So I need 4? probably not. I’m thinking of welding up a simple flat basket to bolt to the top. Either on top of the round bars or in lieu of them. Does look more symmetrical though, which I like.

isn’t 8x gutter mounts and 4x crossbars 80% of the way/cost to a full roof rack?

I’ve been wondering about how a 3/8" sheet of marine-grade plywood would do as a rack. Drill a bunch of 2" holes in it like Swiss cheese, mount it with a few inverted u-brackets and nuts, and use a thick, nonskid stain on it for protection and durability.

I can’t think of a reason that wouldn’t work, assuming you were up for some arts and crafts.

I probably shouldn’t have, but I did.

David Tracy probably says that a lot.

wood it work (sorry, not sorry)? yes.  Would it look like crap?  yes.  I might try my hand at aluminum welding since the price gap between the materials isn’t that far different right now.

Off topic but I dig your bike hanging solution.  I need to get ours off the garage floor.

I think metal is overrated :P

I’ve got an 8'x8' climbing wall in my backyard with non-skid stain on it — 2 years without a touchup. Flat gray, looks pretty good. And that’s only because I wanted something quick and easy. Home Depot can do almost any color they sell.

Or if you wanted to go with polyurethane, you could get a fancier grain of plywood and stain it all upscale , like one of those European powerboats or a vintage teardrop trailer.

I think you could make it look good, and you’ve have near-infinite mounting points with all the holes.

They aren’t pricey.  A little fiddly but otherwise a great option.

I need to get my climbing wall outside. The girls have officially outgrown the inside one.
